PROFILE
I was born in Singapore,
lived in England for
12 years and in Hamilton, New Zealand since 1993.
I started painting in 1994 and it has become a significant part of my
life. I have worked in water-colours, oils and acrylics. Since 2003, I have
increasing used collage as a medium to express my ideas, enjoying in particular
the challenge of creating something new from found objects.
The element of serendipity in collages adds another dimension to the
finished piece - a chanced discovery of an intriguing found object leads to an
idea which then necessitates the hunt for other materials to complete the works
is what makes collages so exciting to create.
My collages are either surreal or abstract. In the
surreal pieces, I often use double entendres hence there is a strong element of
surprise when the viewers discover the hidden meanings. Dadaism plays an
influence in some of my pieces. My abstract pieces use form, colour or texture
to create an overall sense of balance and proportion.
I exhibit regularly, both in group shows as well as in
solo exhibitions. I have also participated in two virtual art exhibitions in Japan and Portugal. In
2004, my collage “Directions to Mondrian’s” was one of New
Zealand’s contributions to the International Collage Exhibition in France.
Another four of my works were part of an exhibition in Boston, USA
alongside works from the International Museum of Collage, Mexico.
My works can be found in public collections in France and Mexico and
in private collections in New Zealand, Australia, England, America, Canada, Singapore and Hong
Kong
