The springboard for the series came from an old calendar of Venetian masks, given to me by my friend, Pam Watson. Toying with the idea of what masks represent and what lies behind became the essence of the series.
Whilst we grow up being taught to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, in reality we are often bombarded with half truths and downright lies, sometimes maliciously but often supposedly for our own good.
Truth can be withheld either overtly or covertly; it can be adulterated, obfuscated and embellished. Censorship, Persecution, Weasel Words, Political Correctness, Legislature further dim the light. Economy with the Truth and Scurrilous Propaganda all contribute towards masking the truth. How does Truth fare in the 21st century.
These collages were created for the 10th International Collage Exhibition & Exchange, in which each international artist produces 13 collages. During the month of April 2008, one from each artist will be exhibited [and are for sale] in the Real Tart Gallery in New Plymouth and in June 2008 another one will be shown in the Amarillo Museum of Art, Texas, USA where it thereafter becomes part of AMoA's permanent collection. After the exhibitions, the collages are then distributed amongst the participating artists, each artist thus receiving works from fellow artists from around the globe.
