Figuratively Speaking...
Being born in land-scarce Singapore, New Zealand's wide, open spaces and beautiful countryside has tremendous appeal to me. I have been on many field trips to the west coast township of Raglan where works of art come alive in the landscape. In places, the amplitude and interweaving of forms undergo a transformation and become positively alive with "people". Elsewhere, the combination of sky, sea, sand and rolling hills produces a composition that is both tranquil and harmonious, imbuing the viewer with an immense sense of serenity.
I also enjoy life studies and "see" in my nude models rolling hills and plains.
In this series I have intertwined human forms and land forms to expose some of their common inherent qualities - such as their innate strength, their fecundity and hence their ability to procreate in perpetuity. My paintings as such have a semi-surreal feel to them.
I have taken this surreal aspect one step further in the eye paintings. My inspiration for these came from the Belgian surrealist painter, Rene Magritte and in particular his "The False Mirror". Once again the human forms have found their way into my paintings - this time as embodiment of figures of speech.
